Pointers for Composition Writing

Dear 2C,

For the composition test next Tuesday, you will be given a question paper and a piece of foolscap paper. Please remember to leave a line when you write your story.

1. Do not waste time counting the number of words in your writing. So long as you are able to write  a complete story from beginning to the end, we will still give  you the content marks.

2. Remember to write your story in paragraphs. We need at least 3 paragraphs: Introduction , Body, Conclusion. Please leave 2 finger spacing when you start a paragraph.

3. Adverbs are useful. Just by adding words like 'sadly', 'hurriedly' can add meaning to your sentences.

4. Add more words to describe the characters' feelings, actions and thoughts. Make sure you know how to spell it out :)

Examples:
- froze with fear
-groaned in pain
-heaved a sigh of relief
-flew into a rage

Some common words useful to learn for conclusion will be
-regretted
-apologised
-promised

5. Write short sentences. It will give impact to your story.

6. Write in past tense.

7. Do not overuse speeches in your story. One or two speeches are fine.
Many of you are still unsure about punctuation in speeches. It you are not sure, avoid using speech during the composition test.

8. Do not use contractions(can't, don't) in your stories. But you can use them in speech.

9. Use words such as ' Just then' , ' Suddenly', 'After a while ', 'Soon' to ensure that your story flows and links well.

That's all for now. All the best for your FIRST writing test next week.

Love,
Mdm Faizah
